Frankincense

Frankincense is also known as Olibanum and is made from the resin of the Boswellia tree which typically grows in the regions of India, Africa, and the Middle East. 

It's used in traditional ayurvedic medicine and appears to offer certain health benefits that range from improving arthritis and digestion to reducing symptoms of asthma and even better oral health. 

One of the main reasons we were so interested in it was its ability to help possibly reduce arthritis by preventing the release of Leukotrienes, which are chemical compounds that can cause inflammation.  

Boswellic acid, among other terpenes, seem to be the strongest Anti-inflammatory compounds in frankincense.

Then, in a 2018 systematic review and meta analysis, Frankincense was consistently more effective At reducing osteoarthritis pain and improving Mobility then the placebo. ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0049017218300027)

In a later study, participants Took 169.33 mg of boswellia extract twice daily for 120 days. The results from this study stipulated that the substance reduced inflammation, joint pain, and stiffness in mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis without serious side effects. Still, in another study found that oliban oil, or frankincense, when applied to the skin for 6 weeks, Reduced osteoarthritis pain. 

As you can see, there is significant reason to look to Frankincense for relief from osteoarthritis and other pain-related conditions throughout the body.  In addition to these affects, there is a possibility that it may also have anticancer properties. 

It also helps to reduce scars in some circumstances and speeds up healing.

Myrrh

In ancient and biblical times, myrrh was burned as incense, often in Combination with frankincense to help purify the air and prevent the spread of contagious disease and bacteria. A recent study found that Burning myrrh and frankincense incense reduced Airborne bacterial counts by 68%. ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29530608/)

In preliminary animal research, It suggested that merge and directly kill bacteria as well as stimulate the immune system to make more white blood cells, which also kill bacteria in the body. 

Myrrh oil Also has been shown to have strong Effects against several infectious bacteria, including some drug-resistant strains. Another very interesting and important benefit of myrrh is the effects it seems to have on skin health and the healing of sores on the skin. Merge has traditionally been used to treat skin wounds and infections.

Most importantly, myrrh has been shown to be effective In combating pain and swelling such as headaches, joint pain and back pain. 

Myrrh oil contains chemical compounds that interact with opioid receptors. These receptors tell your brain you’re not in pain. Myrrh also blocks the creation of inflammatory chemicals in the body that can lead to swelling and pain. Lavender has been used for years in aromatherapy because of it’s calming properties.  Lavender has a multitude of uses when it comes to health and wellness.  It is also one of the most studied essential oils on the market with very little side effects. 

So what are the health benefits of Lavender? 

Many of the most well-known benefits of lavendar are skin and inflammation related. Lavender has been used for acne, eczema and dry skin, skin lightening, face wrinkles, and wound-healing. 

Let’s start with lavender on the skin for a myriad of reasons. 

Lavender has been used for years for assisting in healing abrasions, headaches, and muscle pain. It has successful antibacterial And anti-fungal properties against different bacterias when often times, traditional medicines fail. 

Lavender can be applied to red or inflamed and itchy skin in a form like Kanna Kream salves to help lessen redness, irritation, inflammation, and itchiness. It’s often used in this capacity for psoriasis and eczema and dry skin. 

Next, it can be used to lighten skin.  Because it reduces inflammation, it can also be used to help aid in skin lightening.  It can also be used for hyperpigmentation in certain circumstances with success. 

Lavender is full of antioxidants that help protect the skin and body from free radicals.  Because of this, it can be used to help with face wrinkles when combined with high-quality moisturizer. 

Lavender is also anti-inflammatory.  This is one of the primary reasons that we included it in our Kanna Kream Salve.  It’s pain-relieving and numbing effects help soothe and reduce inflammation while the beta-caryophyllene in the oil also helps with inflammation. This is one of the reasons that our salve works for skin abrasions and burns. You can use it on burns, sunburns.
